What a sad, sad story, Anon 10.19. Will this be the end of civil litigation as we came to know (and love?) it? It's insane. A letter in the Daily Telegraph on Monday pointed out that the fee for issuing a claim for £190,000 will go up from £1,315 to £9,5000. Madness!

I told my children that I would not finance them through university if they wanted to train as solicitors. I was simply not prepared to aid and abet their getting into a life of crime, or civil, or matrimonial, or conveyancing for that matter. It was the best advice I ever gave them.

In fact I rather wished I had stayed in Eastbourne where a good living can be had out of the dying and dead. Probate appears to be one of the few remaining profitable areas of practice, albeit rather dull. Still despite the name there are few deadlines to worry about.
