One of the founding principles of a democracy is meant to be access to Justice. Over the last 15 years there have been many inroads into that principle in the UK.

This exorbitant hike in Court Fees excludes all but the most impecunious and extremely well-heeled from commencing litigation. The Politicians have not thought this through, and I do not understand why there is not more of an uproar about this from some of the very good legal journalists out there. There cannot be even a pretence of Justice, where so many prospective Claimants are effectively barred from commencing proceedings, irrespective of the merits or importance of their Claim.

I wonder just how much the Government will earn from selling off the RCJ and umpteen other Buildings for which there is no longer a use, and save from reducing the head count of court staff and the Judiciary. Or perhaps they will outsource the entire administration of Justice to the Private Sector, based in Luxembourg for tax purposes?

I am glad to see that the Law Society is attempting to put pressure on the Government to reconsider, but do not hold out much hope that they will succeed
