We could fight for more funding or simply go out an get it. Why isn't anybody realising that it's possible to address the Legal Aid problem through private sector finance? Simple steps can be taken to improve funding of criminal legal services without reliance on government resources. By aligning with emerging consumer credit providers such as Bar Council's 'Legal Cost Finance’ (which offers cost-neutral credit to clients), legal service providers and the government can (with a single decisive swoop) significantly reduce recourse to Legal Aid, reduce the number of unrepresented cases in court, and restore the dented revenues of solicitors and barristers.
