I'm not commenting on our situation but the taxi industry has got what it has long deserved.

The safety of the public means that it needs some sort of basic regulation. However, the way their unions have got a stranglehold on who gets permits and how many so that not even non-Labour local authorities dare take them on means the industry is run for the operators' benefit, not the public's. That taxi plates change hands for large sums of money and that owners can franchise their cars profitably so that drivers pay them to drive rather than the other way round, is proof of this.
