Many solicitors do more pro-bono work than they think. How many ask a client to pay for legal work done for their bank or building society on a residential mortgage? Assuming one's hourly rates are more than the equivalent rate earned on a legal aid retainer, there's another pro-bono element. It could be easier to log 10% freebie time than one might think. I think that what I did before I retired would not have been of much value to the average member of the public. Hence one can envisage moving seamlessly from doing something for nothing, to spending on training to secure a competence to do something for nothing. Or perhaps the authorities that be would waive the need for competence? Has the Law Society yet come out to say what a wonderful idea this is? Anyway the originators of this impressive suggestion have an email contact point, and so I have just e-mailed for my pro-bono copy.
