It's always been a failure unless you count a 10% agreement outcome a success. And very often that agreement was unworkable when presented to solicitors. Since starting practice 20 years ago I have had hopes for mediation but have never been convinced of its efficacy.
I think if a proper survey was conducted you would find that third party friends have more success than professional mediators.
