Thank goodness someone has had the courage to say the obvious.

Any litigant wants the best calibre judge hearing his/her case. I cannot think of any client who would want his case heard by a judge appointed because of his/her gender or his/her colour etc. They all want their case heard by a judge who is competent and has read the papers.

There is a tendency amongst some to think that, as over half the current entrants to the profession are women, more women should be appointed judges than men. However in this country judges are not appointed from new entrants to the profession, but those who joined some years ago when the ratio was somewhat different.
