I fell ill in Friedrichshafen 7 June. I was told I had three days to live if they did not operate immediately. They said it was the fault of the surgeon who operated on me in 2010. I had to be flown home after the operation. I appear now to be fit and well again, except that my golf swing has gone to pot, whence it came actually. NHS paid for the German hospital fees. Travel insurance got me home. What have I lost? Can I be bothered to claim? Certainly not. In fact I had a second holiday when I went to collect my car and caravan.

And if you must fall ill abroad I can heartily recommend Friedrichshafen's Klinikum. They were operating on me four hours after admission and at midnight on a Sunday at that. Brilliant. But don't forget your IHIC.
