This is an extremely worrying development. Yes, I agree, the system is broken, but the lead-up to this point is not recent, it has taken about 20 years or so to reach this point. I was a member of the Sole Practitioners Group working party drafting a response to Lord Mackay's White Paper on Legal Aid and we warned, even then, that cutbacks to legal aid would lead to an increase in LIP's clogging up the courts and wasting their time. Our warnings fell on deaf ears. However, even we did not predict this appalling, extreme behaviour, which is very frightening indeed.

I am afraid this dreadful event shows us, and should show Government, that the cutbacks in legal aid have led to a breakdown of law and order, respect for our judiciary, and of the law in general.

More of this, and worse still, is yet to come, unless Government gets a grip and reverses the damage that has been done to the system.
