It's up to the client and her solicitor to specify the scope of legal services to be provided. So long as the retainer letter clearly spells out (a) the limited scope of the service(s) to be provided (b) the fact that no other service other than those expressly set out in (a) are to be provided (c) a duty of care will arise in relation to (a) but not (b), everyone should know where they stand, the solicitor should be protected, and the client can't argue the solicitor had a duty of care in relation to (b).
