I would suggest that Margaret Thatcher had no sympathy for the professions which she regarded as cosy clubs of incompetents who would not survive if exposed to commercial realities.
What she failed to comprehend IMHO was that the professions (then) were not businesses operated solely with a view to profit for their owners. They actually had a tradition of serving the interests of their clients - not just self-serving greed. That, of course, is now history.
