Up to now, solicitors have done all the work to get cases either settled or in shape to be tried at court. Whilst there may be complaints about the level of cost, civil litigation lawyers dealing with the great bulk of high street work have never been fat cats. Their costs reflect the work necessary.

You either have to cut down the amount of work necessary, at risk of allowing injustice through inadequately prepared cases, or court staff and judges have to do the work instead.

It seems odd that this government might be considering in effect nationalising civil litigation. I thought the private sector was always more efficient?
