The role of "interpreters" in immigration work can be a little more sinister than mere profiteering and restricting asylum-seekers' ability to "exercise real choice". Some also assist "their" clients through the whole process and coach them in the fraudulent stories most likely to succeed. Most asylum-seekers are neither in a position to make an informed choice of legal adviser nor do they have any wish to do so. What they want are advocates (interpreter and lawyer) who will give them the best chance, by any means, of securing leave to remain.
