Of course those at the very top in private practice earn high 6, even 7, figure sums such that the prospect of an 80-90% pay cut is hardly attractive, but with 10, 15 even 20 years of earning that sort of money should mean that such individuals will not exactly be hard up and in desperate need of a huge salary. The kudos, and a sense of 'giving something back', ought to have a considerable value and perhaps such matters once did.

Anyway, it is difficult to reconcile such lofty salaries with those for medical consultants: the basic pay scale for a 19+ years consultant is 'just' £101,451 p.a.. Which position is the most deserving? The public will surely find it a bitter pill to swallow to be told that a HCJ is paid c.75% more than a very senior consultant.
