This isn't much of a story really: 11.3% of 70,040 staff received bonuses averaging £290, a total cost of about £230,000. Most comments associate this by contrast with the squeeze on public spending on justice. Anon at 3.54pm suggests these MoJ staff are overpaid, referring to a quango position advertised at £90,000. That has nothing to do with MoJ pay rates, which are civil service set (quangos are not the civil service: a clue is in their acronymic name).

One might view this story as good news, in that staff are rewarded modestly for extra effort. It would be interesting to see how this bonus scheme compares with the bonus position in other government departments. Is it more or less generous, or about the same?

While I am no fan of the current government's approach to the administration of justice, I prefer to base my criticism on solid evidence. Which this isn't.
