Ms Guy seems to have forgotten that, pursuant to article 6 of the EU Convention on Human Rights, hearings must take place in public; the technology does not exist that would make a virtual courtroom possible. As for holding courts in public buildings, it is difficult to see the point of closing courts only to rent space elsewhere; besides, HMCTS has produced no evidence of the feasibility and cost of temporary courts. I should like to believe, like Ms Guy, that 'the government’s aim' was 'to help more people secure justice ...', but closing 86 courts before any alternative is available is more likely to restrict access to justice than to increase it.
