This debate is weathered. There are many individuals who can provide outstanding and bad advice and service whether they be legal execs, solicitors, paralegals etc

I would rather get someone without the qualifications to give me an operation if he or she was better than someone who was a dr / surgeon with a terrible reputation. I don’t suppose that can happen though in that field can it?

If it could or does I think I would be curious to know (in my own health interests) the difference in my options. I’m one who likes to know what I’m getting.

I guess this is where the point lies because we can instruct different “labels” in the legal profession. I would want to know the difference if I’m handing over some important legal business /work. If the answer was that they are both the same, achieve the same levels but they do it in different ways then I guess I now know I can instruct either and to now concentrate on getting a good one with a good reputation.

I think the position though is that the label solicitor has a historical attachment of someone with standing and professionalism who is turned to, to properly represent your interests in a time of need albeit that it’s a label in tatters or ridicule at times. It’s difficult to get away from the association though in peoples minds. I was aware of that when training as a solicitor i.e that it might prove difficult if I was a legal exec to get someone to respect me in the same way as a solicitor even if the reality was that I was 100 times better than most solicitors.
