The antipathy towards solicitors, promoted by government and the media and in part endorsed by the bar and the judiciary, means that the general public get a very jaundiced view of the profession, so for most we are not "trusted advisors" but instead money grabbing incompetents.
Decent legal advice, which was then acted upon, would have sorted this couple out. We need to change perceptions, not the law. As an earlier post implied, no-one would be suggesting legislative change if the house had burnt down when it wasn't insured.
