I am sure you are both absolutely correct and completely honest, Richard. I we were all to speak so openly we would have to say we just don't know what the future holds, in or out. No one can say, hence the mass debate which we shall now be subjected to until the referendum.

What I cannot understand though is why we cannot decide each issue on a piecemeal basis. If it suits us to cooperate on, say, a European Airbus, or fighter jet, then do so. If agricultural production is best organised on a country by country arrangement, then let's do that.

It's a bit like Somerset Maugham's short story "The Facts of Life". The lad wants to try out sex so he goes to a prostitute, she promises him the earth, gets him intoxicated, he falls asleep and when he wakes up she's disappeared with all his money...and he still hasn't experienced sex... That's more or less my view of EU... and sex. 'If in doubt, get out'.
