Worryingly, I can foresee children suggesting, to avoid the nasty new probate fees or the OPG's registration fees for a lasting power of attorney, that mum and dad simply put everything in joint names with the children. Or even better, thereby saving nursing home bills, pass everything on to the children now.
At least the starting point of £50,000 might mean the executors of estates with just less than this amount apply for probate with the scant protection this provides, rather than taking advantage of the banks' 'small estates' procecedure and the further opportunities for taking advantage this gives
