A quick supplementary comment (and thanks, David for your comments).... The chancellor has recognised that the IHT threshold needs to increase to take account of the rising value of property so has anounced the introduction of the family home allowance from April 2017. With the transferable nil rate band, in some circumstances this will mean that, from 4/2017, some estates valued below £850k will pay no IHT. Perhaps the Minister of Justice could do the decent thing and read what his chancellor is doing, and at the least, delay his proposed 1,000 fold increase (£45 to £4000) until April 2017, so that the increased IHT threshold at least sofens the blow!
