I thought the ethos behind Woolf was that the system had become overlong and too expensive due to the tactical involvement of solicitors and judges would be expected to take control of the process and conduct the proceedings (hence the ending of automatic directions and the introduction of case management hearings and costs budgeting etc etc etc)
And now, the judiciary complain that there is a lot that they are required to do, that they need not have done

We have had a system designed and run for the convenience of the judiciary for approaching 20 years - if they don't like it, which they clearly don't I would rather have the potential solutions from someone unconnected to the bench or the bar
