Am I the only one who does not understand why this has become a cause celebre?

Here is a man who deliberately flouted planning law. He knew exactly what he was doing, and that it was wrong. He gambled on not getting caught. The gamble did not pay off. Now after having exhausted all his legal remedies he suffers the consequences, as does everyone else who gets caught.

OK so it doesn't make for as good a tabloid story as "little man stands up for his rights against big bad local authority" but that is not the story here.

Can someone tell me what I am missing?
