If you want to employ a qualified solicitor, it is not unreasonable that you must expect to pay a reasonable amount by way of hourly rate, commensurate with their experience and ability, for the time they spend on your file. That is the only fair way of charging for legal services whether a claim is for £50 or £5 million pounds. It is not unreasonable for experienced, qualified solicitors to expect to earn a yearly amount on a par with other professionals of similar standing.

I sometimes wonder how many of these so called 'fat cat' solicitors working in poorer parts of the country may actually be earning so little they are eligible for benefits themselves! However, articles like this, journalists, the government et al tend to tar them all with the same fat cat brush which does nobody any favours.
