This is by far the most telling and important contribution to this debate.........
On 29 May 2014 a listener to Radio 4's 'You and Yours' emailed in response to an interview with an IFB spokesman who said it is estimated that ‘crash for cash’ scams cost up to £400m a year. The clip (probably still available on iPlayer if you look for it) is:

“This one comes from a listener who used to work for an insurance company, she says, ‘The person [the IFB spokesman] says the rise in fraudulent claims may not always be due to an actual increase in people cheating the system. I was threatened with losing my job if I didn’t make more ‘red alerts’. Workers in these call centres are under extreme internal pressure to report as many claims as fraudulent as possible.’”

If this is true , and I have no reason to doubt it, this is sufficient evidence to justify a public inquiry into the behaviour of the Insurance Industry in relation to its influence of government policy. It is scandalous but ,with our lazy and compliant press, it will not even be mentioned again.
