This, on the same day as the headline' Co-op Legal back in profit, quits legal aid', is very telling. It sums up what is the approach of legislators and regulators is sacrificing on the altar of perceived innovation in the provision of legal services.

There have been many instances of what is passed off as innovation being little more than commoditisation to the lowest common denominator and/or fixed fees (helpful for clients but hardly innovative). Many small firms are closing or will do so in the near future, reducing choice and access to justice. Insufficient heed is being paid to the long-term consequences of that. Consumers of volume, packaged services (personal injury and conveyancing) may be well served but those with different needs may not be served at all.
