Depends what you consider a luxury, doesn't it? Back in the 19th century when a lot of people couldn't afford more than a minimum amount of clothing, a clean shirt was a luxury. But today we'd regard that as a minimum for a decent life. And until legal aid came in, most people couldn't afford to buy legal services so they went without; and suffered whatever injustice the lack of legal advice and help visited upon them. Not sure I'd regard equal treatment before the law and enforcement of the rights the law gives me as a luxury myself. And I'm also not sure I regard the fact that a few decent lawyers elected to concentrate their work in supporting the rights of the poor who otherwise wouldn't have had any as a proper reason to criticise them.
