The current training arrangements are indefensible in my view. They combine high cost with low standards and enormous variation in standards from one institution to another. A central exam, properly run, should be better and allow for innovation in courses.
And before someone tells me I do know what I am talking about, I used to run the College of Law's London branch and was an external examiner at another institution.
