He's dead now, of course, but he did enjoy riding his bike furiously down Church Hill and onto the A 5, a major trunk road, and see how far he could get before he had to start peddling, all that despite the state of the traffic which is quite heavy in the summer months. Having fought on the Western Front he didn't appear to consider the risks of this activity very great and he survived years of doing it. Everything is relative I suppose. He also never bothered with a crash helmet, high viz clothing, or any of that sort of thing!
