Erdogan is an authoritarian in outlook and nature, as witnessed by his decision to impose martial law for three months, thereby allowing the suspension of most of the European Convention on Human Rights. He is simply using the coup attempt to change Turkey from being a secular state into a repressive Moslem theocracy.
