On 3rd September it will be 66 years since I joined what was then The Legal Profession as an office boy. There were basic standards of honesty and integrity combined with legal knowledge. Some of you may be old enough to remember what these were. Soliciting was a very very serious offence.
Then some idiots decided to allow it and allow the throwing away of all ethical and moral standards.
What we have now is the result.
The result of the old standards was that I went on to become a clerk, then Managing Clerk, then Legal Executive. I was GIVEN articles and the training which went with them. I did not have a university degree. I went to day release lectures and night school and Manchester central Library always encouraged and helped by my principal.
Eventually I qualified and set up as a Sole Practitioner the same day I was admitted.
This was achieved solely as a result of belonging to what was then an honourable profession.
Why on earth did they have to throw it all away and put in its place what we have today where dishonesty is an essential ingredient of behaviour and moral and ethical standards are just words which will be found in a dictionary.
