"....I don't personally believe the Legal Aid Agency, the SRA, and the National Crime Agency are all the willing agents of the Shiner-despising Daily Mail. I may be wrong, but if they are, then we really are in a mess. .."

Whilst acknowledging the fact that you are referring to the Torygraph, I do have a certain amount of agreement with you on this. A certain person I know applied for the other major Class Action "Warrior" - Firm (that used the Legal Aid Scheme to work up Class Actions to personally benefit from). One or other of these firms used to have a certain amount of ethics (belonging to the Legal Action Group for example before that once remarkably highly regarded organisation itself was hijacked by the Legal Aid Industry (Cherie Blair's Firm), which few remainders left are now knocking each other on the head to steal Crime Legal Aid Orders from each other (rather like the later 1780's). That person I seem to recall wa told that they 'cared' too much about the provision of Elgal Services to the underprivileged.

Ahem ...... yes .... mmm...?

There only one way out of this. Pay Solicitors involved in the provision of Legal Services to those who have no cash properly. Remove the right to Maintenance and Champerty (other than possibly through Solicitors Firms with appropriate insurances both against adverse costs and PI claims) and police the ethics again properly (and I don't mean going after small practices because they are easy meat).

"....If all that has been alleged against Shiner is proved to be true this is precisely the sort of abuse which has caused the system of legal aid to fail and to be withdrawn. This is very similar to what happened to the Green Form Scheme in the 1980s. A few bent practitioners spoil things for everyone, practitioners and clients. They also make the headlines by which the general public judges the whole of the profession. .."

The fact of who is able to obtain Legal Aid David is not the problem, its the mind set in the profession, the ethics and above al the crazy status and state of the dumbed down "professional" "exams" (in both branches).
