It is not news that the Liberal Democrats are opposed to the cuts in legal aid. We always have been and our party conference has passed several motions about this before, about the importance of access to justice, before, during and since the Coalition. Readers may not be aware, or may have forgotten, that the Liberal Democrats were a minority party in the Coalition and were not able to persuade the Tories in Cabinet not to make the cuts. Although Lord McNally and Simon Hughes became Ministers in the Ministry of Justice, they were not responsible for legal aid. The recent comments by Lord McNally about 'access to justice' do not represent the policy of the party. If the Liberal Democrats had not joined the Coalition, the country would now be bankrupt, and Jeremy Corbyn would be the Prime Minister by now.
