I observed 6 or 7 years ago in my book, Risk and Compliance in a Changed World, that “As the practice of law continues its transition to one of business, it is perhaps of passing interest that the definition of ‘profession’ in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in 1990 was “a vocation or calling, esp. one that involves some branch of advanced learning”. In the current edition it is “a paid occupation, especially one involving prolonged training and a formal qualification”.

Post Legal Services Act 2007, we are neither independent nor a profession. We answer to non-lawyer regulators who, in turn, answer to a Parliament.
