A very interesting discussion, John and David. As a 75 year old non-lawyer, I would prefer an intolerant 'professional' form of regulation, with judges in criminal cases empowered to strike-off (if I'd ever thought about the latter, that's what I would have assumed). As well as a barrister a bit younger than myself, I have 3 solicitors in the next generation of my family, and I think at least 2 of the 3 (non-practising while bringing up children) would not have opted for the profession as it seems to be now .
