Mr Tomlinson:

There are some people without valid passports or other travel documents who manage to get to the UK through being smuggled or hiding themselves on board lorries, occasionally trains and possibly boats. Perhaps a number of them do so without being detected. Some are spotted climbing out of lorries inland. Some of course are discovered dead sealed into containers. Some thousands are living rough on the coast in France hoping for the opportunity to sneak into the UK.
Please cite your authority for the 1 to 2+ million figure you quote.

How many appellants before the tribunal are legally represented, please?

Please provide evidence, by reference to specific cases, of solicitors delaying the resolution of their clients' cases.

Please define 'border-free entrance'. The last time I flew back into the UK I went through border control. The last time I came back from 'the Continent' by train I went through border control. The last time I came back from France by ferry I went through border control. As I happen to have a UK-valid passport I was not unduly delayed. What is the factual evidence I am ignoring, please?

Mr Maloney:
Yes, they held a referendum which asked whether people wished to leave the EEC (as it then was), the government having entered without a referendum the year before - having been elected on the basis that that was the UK's long -term policy objective. A minority said yes, a majority said no. The rest presumably had no definitive opinion one way or the other and just wanted to get on with their own lives without being bothered with having to make difficult choices. Or they thought the pros and cons were unclear and preferred to 'wait and see'. Rather like this time, in fact.

Ms Humble: I'm sure the police would be terribly grateful if you could just identity for them the terrorists 'being allowed to wander our streets at large'. I think at the moment they may be having a little difficulty gathering the necessary intelligence and proof themselves. Obviously you might need to provide a certain amount of credible evidence to justify a refusal of bail...
