@London Lawyer. I feel you should make a distinction between the Council, which governs the Law Society, and the many technical committees which are focussed on legal developments. The committee that I chair (Intellectual Property) has about 15 members and does valuable work for the benefit of the UK, eg campaigning for 10 years for changes to the law on IP threats, and recently helping to get the Intellectual Property (Unjustified Threats) Bill through the House of Lords. We are currently doing a great deal of work on the implications of Brexit for UK and European IP laws, including helping to brief government officials on the issues that need to be addressed.

Multiply this work by 21 committees covering different areas of law and it becomes apparent that a large number of volunteers are required.
