I am amazed by the various comments regarding underpaid and overworked trainees- I am sorry but perhaps I come from an underprivileged background and thus regard this whole argument as unmeritorious. To my mind before I went into the profession some 40 years ago I realised that one has to make some initial sacrifices to qualify and get into a respected profession which I did - i never complained at being paid a wage of £10 per week and was most grateful to my principal Mr Anthony Rayner Hodder for giving me the opportunity- since that date I have had many a trainee under me and yes I have overworked them but also told them that they are free to tell me that they do not want to be overworked- because in any event i will unless there is something terribly wrong issue them with a confirmation that they have undergone a training- however it is their only opportunity to learn and believe me 18 months is not a long time- i know many trainees who have learnt nothing in 18 months irrespective of pay or amount of work.
so all in all I think this is not a constructive debate- I think trainees should allow themselves to be used to the max- that is the way they will learn most and realise what it the future holds for them.
