It is certainly very hard being a trainee and it would be a poor show if it were not. People entering the professions are motivated by high rewards and status and the baptism of fire at the beginning of the career is valuable training in itself.

Very many people will spend their entire working lives underpaid and overworked with little choice in the matter. If trainee solicitors find the first couple of years too onerous they do have the option to seek alternative arrangements.
