I was trainee around 10 years ago in Newcastle working at a relatively small firm. I am not suprised at some of the salaries as did have the opportunity to discuss at the time with a number of other trainees on the PLC. Some were on the bare minimum but often wouldn't ever have actually touched a file or spoken with a client without supervision. I was expected to fee earn and run my cases, with supervision, and while I recall i started on £16k by my second year I was pulling in a decent salary of £28k. It is truly saddening if the figures above have become the accepted norm.

At present I now have the pleasure of supervising two trainees. Both are quite competent and bring in billing competitive of some more qualified staff in the office; I certainly do not consider them a burden. I don't agree that you need to waste a full day training. Training is best served "on the job".

Having said that their salary is not commensurate with their billing (hence the anonymity of the post) and my calls for pay review often fall on deaf ears of our partners "oh but we spent £X on training"

I do believe the PLC courses are a waste of time. My trainees have around 6 full day "core" modules and 6 full day "elective" modules. These seem to be either mostly basic skills already covered on the LPC or general "form filling" for the electives.
