As a political / economic historian I always preferred AJP Taylor.

Would you prefer I recommend:-

The Crisis of Parliaments English History 1509-- 1660 it has a fascinating section on the impact of the Spanish conquests in S America and the resultant economic consequences . . .
or Braudel's Vol 2 The Wheels of Commerce civiliztion and capitalism in 15th-18th century Europe (I had to rely on the translated copy due to my schooboy French) . . . or
if you've a lefty tutor Thompson's The Political Economy of the New Right, . . . or Munck's Seventeenth Century Europe again a cracking section on 'the nobility and office holders'.

The above sitting on the bookshelf next to the fireplace (along with probably another 100 or so) so run along boy, I would buzz you with my copy of The Road to Serfdom but I think it's in the jakes at the moment.
