On the one hand I agreed with you Anon 12.41 it feels nicer to be part of a profession than an industry. On the other the government clearly cares not a jot about the "professions" (see the junior doctors and the last 5 years of them bashing ours).

There is a certain appeal in calling us an industry - makes us sound more blue collar and more appealing to the people. The issue we have always had is that we're all "fat cats" so no one feels bad for us. Re-branding ourselves as the "working man" might save us.

What we have been doing up to now clearly hasn't worked in any event.
