I would say the compensation culture has fuelled this. As a young lawyer in conveyancing, the main phrase I hear is 'cover your back', which translates into your client will want to sue you at some stage.
As technology has developed we have also become more connected, which means clients expect instant replies.
I had a complaint raised against me to the legal ombudsman for merely doing my job (LeOb confirmed as such). They may have come in my favour, but it did not stop me feeling gloomy and stressed about the situation.
But if we are stressed, where do we turn? We do not have a union, and the Law Society and the SRA are far more concerned with clients satisfaction than solicitor well being. We do not have the job security people think, so it is unlikely that you can tell your firm how stressed that you are feeling without fearing the vultures around you.
