When I entered the profession in 1976, in Leeds, we had a number of (mostly) criminal law practitioners who were "characters". Indeed, one went on to the Judiciary.
And they were characters! They added to the then colourful milieu of being in practise.
One, famously, is alleged to have said in a contested bail application "as Murders go, this wasn't a very bad one".....
Today, with the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou approach applied by "Authorities" they would all be struck off.
