If the MOJ wanted to cut the cost to the taxpayer, it could think about addressing the fee remission system.

Currently we have a system where certain paying parties solicitors seek to avoid having to pay Court fees by reference to the argument that if the Claimant is on a low income/benefits, they are entitled to the Court fees from the public purse.

Ironically (or rather cynically), often the reason that the Claimant is on such a low income or benefits is because the Defendant put them in that situation !

Therefore we have a system which allows the public purse to be used for fees which should of course be paid for by the tortfeasor. Not only does this unfairly hit the taxpayer but it also gives the tortfeasor an unjust windfall.

This is a state of affairs which the MOJ would be addressing if they really wanted to help the taxpayer.
