This is definitely the thin end of the wedge. Start with something we all think trivial, fare dodging and unlicensed fishing. The facts are simple, you either did or did not have a valid ticket, or fishing licence. the penalty is a fine which will be on a scale.
If you know you are bang too rights, and put your hands up to the mighty computer, you can have it dealt with cheaply and quickly with a nice reduction in the penalty for being so co-operative.
Next thing we know the pilot will be found to be a wonderful success, and we can roll it out for all sorts of complex issues.
Soon we can tweak the system to deal with simple contested issues, and before you know it all justice is on line.
I hope so, my "judge-o-matic" fairground machine needs some more work. My summary trial fortune cookies are going stale, and my "Did You Do It?" lucky dip has not seen a punter in weeks. As for my automatic Guilty/Not-Guilty coin tossing device - I will see those who said the coin had two Guilty sides in my online court, where Judge-o-Matic will try the case.
