In 1997 I told Ian Lucas MP (Labour:Wrexham) that if Labour would agree to reverse Lord Mackay's legal aid reforms I would vote for him. His reply was that 'there are no votes in saying you're going to pay lawyers more money, David'.

And that, Rayner, is in part the problem, votes. Plus we now have the huge debt and deficit to try to eradicate, plus the NHS to keep going, added to which care for the elderly, and then there's HS2, plus Heathrow's 3rd runway, and now Brexit...all to pay for.

It really is a puzzle, wrapped up in an enigma and put into a conundrum.
