Sad, sad, sad, I was treated by my principal, James Webster of Eastbourne, like something between a son and a friend. I called to see him in 2013, 40 years after I started my Articles of Clerkship, we had a long chat about old times (yes 'the good olde days' )and we agreed to play golf when i was next in the area. It was taken as read that I would and could stay on for as long as I wanted, although i chose after a while to move back nearer to Wales and to broaden my experience.

I was not paid very much, but I had some interesting experiences and nothing much was expected of me...and I did not disappoint in that regard. James even mildly told me off once when i said I had taken a file home. i can still hear him saying "You should not need to be doing that at this stage, David". Can you imagine a trainer saying that to a trainee nowadays?

Oh yes, those were the days, the good olde days. Gone, never to return sadly, but not forgotten.
