Mr Cockshutt is surely right. Let those who want to get their LL.Bs. But make them, and others without academe, get their TCs or pupillages before they take their qualifying exams. And impose a training levy on both professions to soften the training costs on those Prepared to do the training.

Both professions are able, broadly, to assess need.

And nothing would stop individual trainers and trainees coming to an arrangement outside the scheme.

Actually, this is what - very imperfectly - happened when I started.
