I have over a decade of experience of prisons and there is a simple solution to solve the overcrowding. At first glance you may think a daft idea but sit back and think about it and it makes sense;

Over 80% of people in prison are as a result of illegal drugs, ie dealing, theft to fund drug habit, crimes committed while under the influence of illegal drugs, drug dealers' gang wars ect. Because heroin, cocaine ect are illegal the price of these from dealers is magnified.

Alcohol and Cigarettes are legal yet both of these kill people yet the government make a fortune from these.

Solution - legalize all class A drugs. Available at all good newsagents ect. Government controlled and government makes no profit at all - resulting in price of class A drugs reducing considerably.

Dealers almost eradicated, no dealer gang wars, less theft to pay as the price falls so low as they are legal, less people in prison.

Simple, why let people choose to kill themselves by nicotine and alcohol but apply different rules for class A drugs? If people want to use class A drugs let them, oh but i'm forgetting how much money the government make from cigarette and alcohol sales.
